X-Line Chair: an icon of Danish high-tech design

Designer furniture is often associated with aesthetics and functionality—and the X-Line Chair from the Danish brand HAY is a perfect example of how these principles come together in a single iconic piece. Designed in the 1970s by Niels Jørgen Haugesen, this chair is not only beautiful to look at but also extremely practical.

Minimalism with an industrial edge

The X-Line Chair is made of thin metal wires, and its distinctive X-frame is not just a design element—it also ensures strength, lightness, and flexibility. The chair thus has an airy and modern feel, making it a great addition to offices, home interiors, and cafés alike.

"X-Line Chair je jedním z nejinteligentnějších designů, které z Dánska kdy vzešly. Tak minimalistická a promyšlená," říká Rolf Hay, spoluzakladatel značky HAY.

A legacy of the Danish high-tech movement

The 1970s were a period of change for Danish design. Following the golden era of the 1950s and 1960s, a new challenge arose—to find a new direction that would build on the successes of the past. The X-Line Chair is one of the few objects to emerge from this period that perfectly embodies the so-called high-tech approach. Haugesen, who had previously worked with the legendary Arne Jacobsen, drew inspiration from an engineering approach in designing this chair and revealed its structural principles—no unnecessary decoration, just pure functionality and precise design.

"What I love about high-tech design is its transparency. Nothing is hidden; everything is visible and makes sense," adds Rolf Hay.

If you’re looking for a design element that’s not only beautiful but also functional, the X-Line Chair is a great choice.
